Some of you may know that Nick and I took a recent trip out to the west coast. We flew in to southern Oregon, drove down the northern California coast, and ended our adventures in San Francisco. I thought I would do a series of posts highlighting the awesome places we visited!
While we did see a lot of amazing redwood trees in northern California, we also had the opportunity to gaze upon a grove of giant sequoias in the southern part of Yosemite National Park. These trees are quite a bit different than redwoods–they are not as tall, but tend to get much wider at the base. I loved how the bark was very russet in color.

One of the most spectacular views in Yosemite National Park is found at Glacier Point. This scenic overlook rises a few thousand feet above Yosemite Valley, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the valley, several waterfalls, and amazing mountain scenery. It also puts you face to face with majestic half dome. It was quite breathtaking!

When we planned our trip we didn’t know whether we would make it to Yosemite National Park due to unpredictable October weather in the mountains. Case in point, there was a winter storm warning in the park 2 weeks prior to when we visited! Fortunately, the weather turned unseasonably warm with highs in the upper 70′s and it was absolutely gorgeous. Our first major stop in this large park was Yosemite Valley.

Between Redwood National Park and San Francisco lies a remote stretch of highway that follows along the rugged cliffs of the northern California coast. This road wasn’t for the faint of heart–but the views were spectacular!

At the very end of our day-long tour of the redwoods coast, we decided to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean at beautiful Patrick’s Point State Park. We hiked down to Agate Beach at low tide and enjoyed the glow of the sun fade from the rocks and the pounding surf.

Our last stop along the Redwood coast was Redwood National Park. We walked the majestic Ladybird Johnson Grove and had amazing late afternoon sunlight peeking from behind the tall trees.

One would think that so many different parks featuring coastal redwoods would get a little repetitive after a while, but we were pleasantly surprised by each park’s unique attributes. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park boasted some very tall redwoods, but also had some spectacular fern canyons–we felt like we were in the rainforest!

After our lovely stop at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, we continued on our tour along the coastal redwoods portion of Northern California. The next park south, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, stretches along the coast and offers a preview of the rugged California coastline to come.

After visiting Crater Lake National Park, we headed south to the Redwood Coast in Northern California. There are several interconnected national and state parks, all offering something different with respect to these giant coastal trees. Our first stop was Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, the northernmost park. We enjoyed a secluded drive through a massive grove of Redwoods at sunrise.

Our first stop was Crater Lake National Park. We arrived in the morning and it was so cold, blustery, and foggy that we couldn’t even see the lake! Fortunately the clouds lifted somewhat as the day progressed.
